The distant mountain is Mount Tecumseh, with the Deadman Pass on it’s right, meaning from this vantage we are looking across the Continental Divide. All waters from our vantage point eventually flows east to Hudson’s Bay and the Arctic Ocean, while all water from the far slopes of Mt. Tecumseh flow west to the Pacific Ocean.

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) in Alberta, Canada is a landscape sacred to the Blackfoot people. The site is 32 km (20 mi) east of the town of Milk River. An archaeological preserve within the Park protects the largest concentration of rock art on the North American plains. The artists are thought to be the Blackfoot people who settled this area for at least 3,500 years. There is speculation some of the rock art may be up to 6,000 years old.

Covering the sheer sandstone cliffs of the area along the Milk River are petroglyph carvings, paintings and pictographs which include vivid depictions of hunting and spiritual vision quests. But by far the most common are scenes of warriors and battles. Some speculate these were meant as warnings to neighbouring enemies to stay away. Guided interpretive walks and tours are available from mid-May until Labour Day. Interpretive programs are scheduled regularly.

This is the only owl species where the male and females can be distinguished by the colours of their feathers. Females have dark black mottling on their bodies while males appear almost completely white.

For warmth, their feathers are extremely thick even covering their entire legs, right to the talons on their feet.

They have a round head with no feather tufts, and bright yellow eyes.

This species nests very early sometimes laying eggs in February during the cold winter months.

The great horned owl is one of the largest types of owls in North America.

This owl is dark brown, with a squared off head, gray mottled and streaked below, setting of the stark white throat patch. The white patch is more visible when this owl hoots.

This owl has prominent, widely spaced ear tufts and large yellow eyes.

The black bear (Ursus americanus) is one of the most familiar wild animals in North America today. Black bears are the smallest of the bear species in North America, but are still a bulky and thickset mammal. Approximately 150 cm (5ft) long and with a height at the shoulder that varies from 100 to 120 cm (3.25 to 4 ft). Their weight varies dramatically in the course of a year, lowest in spring, highest in late fall. Adult males typically weigh between 57-250 kg (125 and 550 lb), while females weigh 33% less at 41-109 kg (90–275 lb).

Despite their name, black bears show a great deal of color variation. Individual coat colors can range from white, blond, cinnamon, or light brown to dark chocolate brown or to jet black, with many intermediate variations existing. Bluish tinged black bears occur along a portion of coastal Alaska and British Columbia. White to cream colored black bears occur in coastal islands and the adjacent mainland of south-western British Columbia. Albino specimens have also been recorded. Black coats tend to predominate in moist areas such as New England, New York, Tennessee, Michigan and western Washington. 70% of all black bears are black, though only 50% of black bears in the Rocky Mountains are black.

]]>Nestled in the south-western corner of Alberta, Canada, the Canadian focal point in the Crown of the Continent region of the Rocky Mountains, Waterton Lakes National Park is Canada's fourth national park. It presents visitors with a huge variety of scenic landscapes, ranging from prairie grasslands, aspen groves, alpine meadows, sub-alpine forests to rugged mountain peaks.

Despite being joined with Glacier National Park in Montana, USA to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and being named a World Heritage Site, this park is still slightly off the radar compared to the more famous national parks in North America and is kept that way by it's location and it's network of roads that lead nowhere in particular.

]]>Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) in Alberta, Canada is a landscape sacred to the Blackfoot people. The site is 32 km (20 mi) east of the town of Milk River. An archaeological preserve within the Park protects the largest concentration of rock art on the North American plains. The artists are thought to be the Blackfoot people who settled this area for at least 3,500 years. There is speculation some of the rock art may be up to 6,000 years old.

Covering the sheer sandstone cliffs of the area along the Milk River are petroglyph carvings, paintings and pictographs which include vivid depictions of hunting and spiritual vision quests. But by far the most common are scenes of warriors and battles. Some speculate these were meant as warnings to neighbouring enemies to stay away. Guided interpretive walks and tours are available from mid-May until Labour Day. Interpretive programs are scheduled regularly.

]]>After feeling a little defeated, only seeing two bears for the day and only getting one pic of the two because some guy got out of his car and scared the first one off, I looked to my left and saw this guy walking straight towards my car. I think he wanted to drive :) He actually got about 12 feet away from my car, stuck out his tongue, and proceeded to walk behind my car and back into the bush. I saw one more bear after this one making the total for the day, 4, and total so far this year is 9 bears in the wild, with a lifetime total of 15.

]]>The Barn Owl is a pale, long-winged, long-legged owl with a short squarish tail. Tail shape is a way of distinguishing the Barn Owl from true owl when seen in flight, as are the wavering motions and the open dangling feathered legs. The light face with its heart shape and the black eyes give the flying bird an odd and startling appearance, like a flat mask with oversized oblique black eyeslits, the ridge of feathers above the bill somewhat resembling a nose.

Its head and upper body typically vary between a light brown and a dark grey. The heart-shaped face is usually bright white. The toes, as the bill, vary in colour; their colour ranges from pinkish to dark pinkish-grey. The talons are black.

Contrary to popular belief, it does not hoot, instead it produces the characteristic shree scream, ear-shattering at close range. Males in courtship give a shrill twitter. It can hiss like a snake to scare away intruders, and when captured or cornered, it throws itself on its back and flails with sharp-taloned feet, making for an effective defense. Also given in such situations is a rasp and a clicking snap, produced by the bill or possibly the tongue. It is most recognizable by its "mask-like" face.

The black bear (Ursus americanus) is one of the most familiar wild animals in North America today. Black bears are the smallest of the bear species in North America, but are still a bulky and thickset mammal. Approximately 150 cm (5ft) long and with a height at the shoulder that varies from 100 to 120 cm (3.25 to 4 ft). Their weight varies dramatically in the course of a year, lowest in spring, highest in late fall. Adult males typically weigh between 57-250 kg (125 and 550 lb), while females weigh 33% less at 41-109 kg (90–275 lb).

Despite their name, black bears show a great deal of color variation. Individual coat colors can range from white, blond, cinnamon, or light brown to dark chocolate brown or to jet black, with many intermediate variations existing. Bluish tinged black bears occur along a portion of coastal Alaska and British Columbia. White to cream colored black bears occur in coastal islands and the adjacent mainland of south-western British Columbia. Albino specimens have also been recorded. Black coats tend to predominate in moist areas such as New England, New York, Tennessee, Michigan and western Washington. 70% of all black bears are black, though only 50% of black bears in the Rocky Mountains are black.

Juveniles often have white mottling, especially under their wings.

When seen soaring, these birds hold their wings horizontally flat and at a ninety degree angle to their bodies.

]]>A towering sandstone hoodoo looms overhead, sculpted by glacial melt-waters.

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) in Alberta, Canada is a landscape sacred to the Blackfoot people. The site is 32 km (20 mi) east of the town of Milk River. An archaeological preserve within the Park protects the largest concentration of rock art on the North American plains. The artists are thought to be the Blackfoot people who settled this area for at least 3,500 years. There is speculation some of the rock art may be up to 6,000 years old.

Covering the sheer sandstone cliffs of the area along the Milk River are petroglyph carvings, paintings and pictographs which include vivid depictions of hunting and spiritual vision quests. But by far the most common are scenes of warriors and battles. Some speculate these were meant as warnings to neighbouring enemies to stay away. Guided interpretive walks and tours are available from mid-May until Labour Day. Interpretive programs are scheduled regularly.
